John Cale + Brian Weitz and David Portner

In the mid-1960s, John Cale and his pal Lou Reed founded The Velvet Underground—widely considered one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Since then, Cale has gone on to release numerous albums ceaselessly exploring and innovating in a remarkable variety of genres—from folk-pop to experimental electronica to orchestral to the unapologetically unclassifiable. The remastered and reworked version of his acclaimed 1982 album Music for a New Society was recently released. In the following Thread, Cale swaps stories with Brian Weitz and David Portner (aka Geologist and Avey Tare) of the experimental/psychedelic rock group Animal Collective, whose new album, Painting With (on which Cale makes an appearance) is out February 19.
